El tema de la melancolía ha recorrido los diversos periodos de la historia y, aunque en la actualidad ha dejado de hablarse de ella al menos como enfermedad, sus relaciones con la depresión son innegables. En este trabajo, se discute acerca de las relaciones entre melancolía y depresión, y luego, se estudian los caracteres que manifestaron los hombres y las mujeres melancólicos según fueron representados en la literatura —particularmente en algunas de las obras de William Shakespeare y de Gustave Flaubert— buscando definir si podrían ser incluidos dentro del espectro del desorden depresivo.
The topic of melancholy was always present in the history of the Western culture. Today, melancholy is not a disease anymore but it has close links with depression. In this paper, I discuss the relationship between melancholy and depression, and then I study the features of melancholic characters of the literature, particularly some works by William Shakespeare and Gustave Flaubert, seeking to find if they could be included in the spectrum of the depressive disorder.
