El lenguaje es un tema central en el sistema hobbesiano; constituye un eje de unidad y continuidad en la obra del pensador inglés. La palabra se constituye en la diferencia específica entre el hombre y las bestias y es concebida como producto de la invención humana. Desde la perspectiva social, y en orden a la institución del Estado, el pacto es la obra fundamental de la palabra humana. Es la palabra la que da el ser al Estado como institución artificial, constructo sólo posible a partir de la existencia del lenguaje.
Language as theme is a key element in the hobbesian system, and constitues a major concern that provides unity and continuity. Language, which brings about the essential difference between men and beasts, is the result of human invention. From a social perspective and in relation to the institution of the State, the pact is the main product resulting from language. It is language what creates the State as an artificial institution, something which is only possible thanks to its very existence.
