Abstract
Description
In a reality full of conflicts and deeply rooted in materialism, traditional education does not seem to be able to transmit values with the dept and understanding that they deserve. Hectic lifestyles and human tendency to focus on the ephemeral gives way to impulsive and thoughtless decision making, and the need to turn our look inwards becomes imperative. This paper proposes the integration into traditional teaching of the study of oriental texts, which can be a valuable pedagogical tool, capable of providing meaning to a variety of concepts related to ethics, human behavior, and human relationships. Fragments of the Indian epic poem Mahâbhârata and, especially, those related to the figure the wise uncle Vidura, are included in order to illustrate the aforementioned potential.
