El presente artículo es resultado del análisis iconográfico de las pinturas coloniales en América, referidas a la vida y milagros de San Francisco Javier. El corpus analizado permite alcanzar algunas generalizaciones tendientes a develar la importancia del arte para la evangelización en la conformación de la sociedad colonial. Asimismo, introduce un nuevo paradigma de análisis –la recepción- sustentado por las actuales corrientes historiográficas que, en el cruce interdisciplinario, se enfocan en la reconstrucción de las formas en que eran interpretadas las pinturas, según su cosmovisión y contexto particular.
The present article is the result of the iconographic analysis of the colonial paintings in America, referring to the life and miracles of Saint Francis Xavier. The corpus analyzed reaches some generalizations tending to reveal the importance of art for evangelization in the conformation of colonial society. Otherwise, introduces a new paradigm of analysis –the reception- supported by current historiographic currents in the interdisciplinary crossroads, focus on the reconstruction of ways in which paintings were interpreted, according to their worldview and context.
